— Behind the Scenes —

Every cover I make gets my full attention when I am making it, because it’s going into someone’s home.

 Christy, Christy Crafted Covers

Have you ever wondered what goes into a handmade tissue box cover? I wake up every morning excited to make my orders for the day. Of course, I have to have my coffee first, check my sales from overnight (the ones I sold while I was sleeping), and check emails. Then I shop for new fabrics, which is always the best part, it gives me a dopamine hit every time. Thank you for supporting my addiction, lol.

I want to show you a few behind-the-scenes looks at how I make every handmade tissue box cover and toilet paper cover, start to finish. Just me, my Bernina sewing machine, and 30+ years of sewing.

I’ve been sewing on Bernina machines for the last 25 years. They’re the best machines, with that 1/2″ seam marking on the silver plate that helps me sew the cover. I haven’t found another brand like that, and if it wasn’t for that, I don’t know what I’d do. It helps me get that exact seam allowance to make them perfect.

I also keep at least 3 sewing machines as backups. I’ve learned over the years that this is needed, since sometimes one has to go in for servicing.

— Step One —

The Fabric Arrives

Everything starts with the fabric. I order premium linen in over 20 colors, from crisp ivory and blush pink to deep forest green, navy, teal, and warm taupe. I use linen because it looks beautiful, holds up well.  It’s so much fun to open a box of fabric.  The colors are so pretty and the feel is so nice.

I also love ordering printed fabric but not every order turns out great.  Some fabrics are a disappointment, and I don’t use those even if I thought they’d be good.  Some of the cotton prints are printed to order, and sometimes the color comes out off or faded.   This is the chance I take when I special order these fabrics.  These fabrics go straight into my do not use pile.  I only use the fabric that looks the best.

— Step Two —

Selecting & Cutting Your Fabric

Once your order comes in, I pick out the fabric for your cover by hand. I lay everything on my Fiskars cutting mat and use my Omnigrid ruler and rotary cutter to measure and cut each piece carefully. I don’t rush this step, especially if it’s the last piece of that fabric, because if I cut it wrong, I won’t be able to make your cover.

For pattern fabrics, it takes me longer to cut. I have to map out the center of the design first, then measure out from there to make my cut. This is how I center the design on your cover.

I have so much fabric that it can sometimes take me a while to find the fabric I need to use. I try to stay organized and label my bins to help me find fabric easier, but that fails sometimes, and I’ve been known to look for a fabric for way too long. But I eventually find it, lol.

— Step Three —

Sewing at the Bernina

This is where it comes together. I sew every cover on my Bernina sewing machine. I started sewing at age 10 at craft fairs with my mother, and 30+ years later, this is still my favorite part.

I remember every time a customer bought one of my items, it would spark something in me.  I’d get so excited that someone wanted something that I made.  There was a time I was selling items at a local craft store, back when crafters could rent a shelf or booth and sell their handmade items in the store, way before the internet came along. I made a cute bunny with raw edging, sewn out of ticking fabric. I was in high school when I sold that piece.

One day, I walked into a local business in that same town, and there was my bunny, sitting right on a lady’s desk.  That was the best day ever, seeing that, I still have that pattern to this day.

Each seam is sewn to exact measurements, backstitched at the start and end, and checked as I go. Nothing here is mass-produced. It’s just me, my machine, and your cover getting my full attention from the first stitch to the last.

— Step Four —

Pressing for a Perfect Finish

After sewing, every cover gets pressed with a steam iron. This step makes a big difference in how it looks, it’s what gives each cover that crisp, tailored look you’d expect from a nice home accessory. Linen presses beautifully, and I take my time with each one. I’ll admit, I’ve burned my fingers from the steam way too many times, it just comes with the job.

It’s a small detail, but it’s part of what makes a handmade piece different from everything else out there.

— Step Five —

The Quality Check

Before anything gets packed, I check it over closely. Every seam, every corner, every edge. I check each cover in natural lighting to make sure everything looks right and that there are no little strings hanging off that need to be snipped.

I’m a perfectionist. After 13,000+ orders, I’m still the only person who checks every single item before it leaves. That’s not going to change. There’s no way I’ll ever hire help, even though sometimes I could use it, because I feel like they won’t care as much as I do.  They won’t see the things I see when I’m checking a product.  Your 4,000+ five-star neighbors already knew this, now you do too.

✦ ✦ ✦

— Step Six —

Packed with Love & Shipped

Once it passes my inspection, your cover gets carefully wrapped and packed for shipping straight from my Cincinnati studio to your front door. I triple check to make sure each item is going out to the correct customer, and I write a short thank you note for every order.  I take care with every package because I know what it feels like to get something you ordered that looks like they didn’t even try.

This is the part I really love, knowing this cover found its perfect home. Proudly handmade in the USA, shipped with care, and made to be part of your everyday space for years to come. I’ve sold over 13,000 of these, but I know it’s a big world out there.  Maybe one day I’ll walk into someone’s house or business and see a tissue box cover I made sitting there, being enjoyed by the person who bought it.  Just like that bunny I made all those years ago.
